About Hobby motorhomes
Hobby-Wohnwagenwerk Ing. Harald Striewski GmbH is a German leisure-vehicle manufacturer based in Fockbek, near Rendsburg in Schleswig-Holstein. The company was founded on 1 April 1967 by Harald Striewski and his wife Inge after Striewski built his first caravan in his garage in 1965. By 1983 Hobby was the largest caravan brand in Germany and Europe, and the company added motorhomes to the range in 1984 with the original Hobby 600. The Hobby Group (which includes Fendt-Caravan) now accounts for more than 40 per cent of European caravan production, and the Fockbek plant builds around 10,500 caravans and 1,500 to 3,500 motorhomes a year depending on the season. The motorhome line-up is split into three families: the Optima coachbuilt range (Optima Ontour, Optima Ontour Edition, Optima Ontour Overcab and the higher-spec Optima De Luxe) on the Fiat Ducato; the Vantana panel-van range (Vantana Ontour Edition and Vantana De Luxe) on the Fiat Ducato; and the more recent premium Maxia Van on the VW Crafter, styled around a Scandinavian hygge interior. Hobby is positioned in the mid-market, sitting above Knaus's value lines and below Hymer or Burstner, and has a reputation for high standard specification at the price point. UK dealers including E S Hartley and Adwick Caravans supply new right-hand drive Hobby motorhomes.
Frequently asked questions about Hobby motorhomes
Are Hobby motorhomes any good?
Hobby is one of Europe's biggest leisure-vehicle makers, with around 40 per cent of the European caravan market, and that scale means the motorhomes come with strong standard specification for the price. The Optima De Luxe is the better-equipped coachbuilt with double-floor heating and upgraded soft furnishings, while the Vantana panel vans on Fiat Ducato compete with Knaus and Adria at the value end. Reviews in Practical Motorhome and Out and About Live have generally been positive on layout and fit-and-finish.
What chassis do Hobby motorhomes use?
The Optima coachbuilt range and the Vantana panel vans are built on the Fiat Ducato, the standard European base vehicle. The premium Maxia Van is built on the VW Crafter to differentiate it on price and ride. There is no Ford Transit option in the current motorhome line-up, though Citroen Jumper variants share the Fiat platform.
What is the difference between the Hobby Optima and the Optima De Luxe?
The Optima Ontour and Ontour Edition are Hobby's entry semi-integrated coachbuilts, with the Overcab adding a drop-down bed over the cab. The Optima De Luxe is the upgraded version with higher standard equipment, including better insulation, more comprehensive heating, premium upholstery and trim, and is positioned just below the Premium-range Siesta. Both are Fiat Ducato based.
