About Dormobile motorhomes
Dormobile was the camper conversion brand of Martin Walter Ltd, a Folkestone coachbuilder with roots going back to 1773 as a harness and carriage maker. The first Dormobile camper, based on the Bedford CA van with a side-hinged elevating roof and fold-down beds, was introduced in 1957 and was the first genuinely affordable British production camper van. Over 10,000 were sold within the first few years, and through the 1960s and 1970s Dormobile became the dominant UK motorcaravan builder, with conversions on the Bedford CA and CF, Ford Transit and Thames 400E, Commer PA and PB, BMC J2 and J4, Sherpa, Standard Atlas, Volkswagen Type 2, Toyota Hi-Ace and the Land Rover Series II and III. Martin Walter Ltd was renamed Dormobile Ltd in 1969. The side-hinged candy-striped pop-top became so well known that the word Dormobile entered general British usage as a near-generic term for an elevating-roof camper. The original business closed in 1994 and was revived in 1997 under new ownership in Hampshire, still using the trademarked side-hinged roof on bespoke conversions, though at a fraction of the original volumes. UK listings under Dormobile are almost always classic Bedford CA, Bedford CF or Land Rover conversions sold to the enthusiast and restoration market.
Frequently asked questions about Dormobile motorhomes
Is Dormobile still in business?
The original Martin Walter / Dormobile Ltd business closed in 1994. The name was revived in 1997 by a new owner based in Hampshire, which still builds bespoke conversions using the trademarked side-hinged elevating roof, but in very small numbers. The vast majority of Dormobiles on the UK market are classic conversions from the 1960s and 1970s.
What base vehicles did Dormobile convert?
Dormobile is most strongly associated with the Bedford CA and the later Bedford CF, which together accounted for the bulk of production. Other base vehicles included the Ford Thames 400E and Ford Transit, Commer PA and PB, BMC J2 and J4, Land Rover Series II and III, Volkswagen Type 2, Toyota Hi-Ace and Standard Atlas.
Why is the Dormobile roof side-hinged?
Martin Walter's engineers designed the elevating roof to hinge on one side rather than lifting straight up, so it provided full standing headroom on one side of the van while leaving the other side as a lined ceiling that could carry two stretcher beds. The red-and-white striped canvas sides became the brand's most recognisable feature.
