About Frankia motorhomes
Frankia is a German premium motorhome manufacturer based in Marktschorgast in Upper Franconia, Bavaria. The company was founded in 1960 by Gustav Gross, produced its first motorhome in 1973, and has been part of the French Pilote Group since 1990. Frankia sits at the luxury end of the European market, competing with Concorde, Morelo and Niesmann+Bischoff rather than mainstream German brands. It is known for double-floor construction (introduced in 1995, well ahead of most rivals) which carries services and freshwater between two floor layers for winter use, and for building heavy-chassis A-class and semi-integrated models that are often plated at 4.5 or 5.5 tonnes. The current range is led by the Platin, Platin Pure (under 8m) and the flagship Titan, all typically on the Mercedes-Benz Sprinter rear-wheel-drive 5.5-tonne chassis. The compact Neo line, introduced more recently, brings the brand into a more accessible size and price bracket on the front-wheel-drive Mercedes Sprinter at 3.5 to 4.5 tonnes, and is offered as a semi-integrated (MT) or integrated (MI Black Line). Frankia also builds on Fiat Ducato, Ford Transit and Iveco Daily where required. SMC Motorhomes of Newark is the long-standing sole UK importer and right-hand drive cars are built to order. Typical UK buyers are downsizing from large American RVs or moving up from mainstream coachbuilts.
Frequently asked questions about Frankia motorhomes
Are Frankia motorhomes worth the money?
Frankia is positioned as a luxury German marque alongside Concorde and Morelo, with double-floor construction since 1995, heavy 4.5 to 5.5 tonne chassis and Mercedes-Benz Sprinter underpinnings on most flagship models. New Platin and Titan models start at around 167,000 euros and can pass 200,000 euros with options, so buyers are paying for build standard, payload and self-sufficiency rather than headline equipment, and used examples hold value reasonably well in the UK.
Where are Frankia motorhomes built?
Frankia has built its motorhomes in Marktschorgast, in Upper Franconia, Bavaria, since the company was founded in 1960. Although the brand was acquired by the French Pilote Group in 1990, production has remained at the original Bavarian site.
What is the difference between the Frankia Neo and the Platin?
The Neo is Frankia's compact, more accessible line, built on the front-wheel-drive Mercedes-Benz Sprinter at 3.5 or 4.5 tonnes, and offered as a semi-integrated (MT) or integrated (MI Black Line) at around 6.99m long. The Platin (and the larger Titan) is the flagship A-class liner on the rear-wheel-drive 5.5-tonne Sprinter with double-floor construction and full luxury specification, normally 7.5m or longer.
