The company built its first motorhome in 1978, moved to series production in 1986, and was acquired by the French Trigano Group in 2002, which also owns Auto-Sleepers, Chausson and Marquis Leisure in the UK. Benimar's UK range is split across four families: the Cocoon and Tessoro low-profile and semi-integrated coachbuilts on Ford Transit, the Mileo semi-integrated coachbuilts on Fiat Ducato, and the Amphitryon A-class on Fiat Ducato. The Tessoro and Cocoon's use of the Ford Transit chassis with its 2.0-litre EcoBlue engine and six-speed automatic is a key point of difference against the Fiat-heavy mainstream, and Benimar is one of the more accessible Trigano coachbuilts on price.
