About Benimar motorhomes

Benimar is a Spanish motorhome builder founded in 1974 on the Mediterranean coast at Benicarlo, with its current factory and headquarters at Peniscola in the province of Castellon. The company built its first motorhome in 1978, moved to series production in 1986, and was acquired by the French Trigano Group in 2002, which also owns Auto-Sleepers, Chausson and Marquis Leisure in the UK. Benimar's UK range is split across four families: the Cocoon and Tessoro low-profile and semi-integrated coachbuilts on Ford Transit, the Mileo semi-integrated coachbuilts on Fiat Ducato, and the Amphitryon A-class on Fiat Ducato. The Tessoro and Cocoon's use of the Ford Transit chassis with its 2.0-litre EcoBlue engine and six-speed automatic is a key point of difference against the Fiat-heavy mainstream, and Benimar is one of the more accessible Trigano coachbuilts on price. UK distribution is handled through Marquis Leisure. Typical UK buyers are downsizers and family tourers looking for fixed-bed continental layouts at a lower price than equivalent German coachbuilts.

Frequently asked questions about Benimar motorhomes

Are Benimar motorhomes any good?

Benimar is well regarded for value among continental coachbuilts, particularly the Tessoro and Mileo ranges. They are factory-built in Spain to Trigano Group standards and sold in the UK through Marquis Leisure, so spares and warranty support are well covered. The Ford Transit-based Tessoro is often singled out for its 170bhp engine and automatic gearbox.

Where are Benimar motorhomes built?

Benimar builds all of its motorhomes at its 40,000 square metre factory in Peniscola, on the Spanish Mediterranean coast just north of Benicarlo. The company has been on that stretch of coast since 1974 and produces around 3,000 motorhomes a year there.

What chassis do Benimar motorhomes use?

Benimar uses two main chassis. The Tessoro and Cocoon ranges sit on the Ford Transit, typically with the 2.0-litre EcoBlue engine and the option of a six-speed automatic. The Mileo semi-integrated coachbuilts and the Amphitryon A-class are built on the Fiat Ducato with the 2.3 MultiJet engine.
