Cheap Motorhomes for Sale

Cheap motorhomes for sale under £10,000, listed directly by private sellers through Motorhome Pig, a UK motorhome brokerage.

Under £10,000 buys a proper coachbuilt: a fixed bed, a washroom, a full kitchen and usually four or more berths, typically on a Fiat Ducato, Peugeot Boxer or Talbot Express base and 20 to 30 years old. These have already done all their depreciating, so what you pay is close to what you will get back when you sell. For the price of a couple of family holidays you get the holiday itself, every weekend, with a bathroom you do not have to share. Because we are a brokerage, every one is sold by its private owner rather than off a forecourt, so there is no dealer margin on top.

What your budget buys

Under £5,000

2 listings

The entry point. Mostly 1990s Talbot Express and early Ducato coachbuilts. Budget for some recommissioning, and check the damp before anything else.

£5,000 to £7,500

9 listings

Tidy two and four-berth coachbuilts from the late 1990s and early 2000s, usually with a working washroom and heating you can rely on.

£7,500 to £10,000

10 listings

The top of the bracket. Later coachbuilts, more fixed-bed layouts, and vehicles that generally need less immediate work.

What to look for when buying a cheap motorhome

Age, not neglect, is what makes a motorhome cheap. Motorhomes lose most of their value in the first decade and then flatten out, so a tidy 20-year-old coachbuilt can be mechanically sound and barely depreciating while a five-year-old one is still shedding thousands a year. That is the opportunity at this end of the market, and the only real skill is telling an old vehicle from a tired one. Here is what to look at.

Damp is the deal-breaker

More budget motorhomes are written off by water than by engines. A coachbuilt body is timber-framed and bonded, so once water is in it spreads. Press the walls around windows, rooflights, lockers and the join between the wall and the floor, and take a damp meter with you. Soft spots, staining, a musty smell or lifting wallpaper all mean water has been getting in for a while, and repairing a delaminated wall costs more than the vehicle is worth at this price.

Then the base vehicle

Check the MOT history online before you travel - it is free and it tells you the mileage pattern, the advisories and whether the last few tests were scraped through. Look at the chassis and sills for rust, ask when the cambelt was last done, and check the date codes on the tyres. Motorhome tyres nearly always perish before they wear out, and a set of six on a coachbuilt is a real cost on a £5,000 vehicle.

Then the habitation side

Run everything. The fridge should work on gas, 12V and mains. Test the heating, the water pump, the shower, the toilet flush, the lights and the sockets, and ask for a current gas safety certificate. A leisure battery that will not hold charge is a cheap fix; a dead Truma heater or a cracked shower tray is not.

And the weight and paperwork

Check the V5C matches the vehicle and the person selling it, and read the plate. Coachbuilts are where weight bites: anything over 3,500kg needs a C1 licence, which drivers who passed after 1 January 1997 do not automatically hold. Work out the payload too - an older four-berth with full water and a full locker can be closer to its limit than the brochure suggests. If you will drive into a clean air zone, check the emissions standard before you buy, not after.

Buying a cheap motorhome with Motorhome Pig

Motorhome Pig is a national motorhome brokerage, so a budget listing here is not a part-exchange someone could not shift off a forecourt - it is a private seller's own vehicle, priced by them. We verify the seller, run the advert, handle the enquiries and arrange a viewing appointment with the owner so you can see the motorhome where it lives. When you buy, your money moves through a secure handover rather than a bank transfer to a stranger, and we look after the paperwork. Part-exchange is welcome and finance and warranties are available, though on older vehicles at this price point finance is worth checking with us before you commit.

Cheap motorhomes: frequently asked questions

What is the cheapest motorhome you can buy in the UK?

Realistically, a usable UK coachbuilt motorhome starts around £3,000 to £5,000. Below that you are generally buying a project - a vehicle needing recommissioning, welding or an interior rebuild. The cheapest listings on Motorhome Pig are almost always 1990s Talbot Express or early Fiat Ducato coachbuilts rather than anything modern, and the live price floor is shown at the top of this page.

Are cheap motorhomes worth buying?

They can be excellent value, because motorhomes depreciate hardest in their first ten years and then flatten out. A well-kept 20-year-old coachbuilt loses very little further value, so your real cost of ownership is running and maintenance rather than depreciation. The risk is condition, not age: damp, a tired cambelt or a failing habitation system will cost more than the discount you saved. Get a damp check and a proper mechanical inspection before you commit.

What should I check on a cheap motorhome before buying?

Damp first - press the walls, corners, around the windows, rooflights and lockers, and take a damp meter if you can. Then the base vehicle: MOT history, service records, cambelt interval, rust on the chassis and sills, and tyre age. Then the habitation side: gas certificate, water pump, heating, shower, 12V and mains systems, and whether the fridge runs on all three power sources. Finally check the V5C matches the vehicle and the seller, and that the plated weight suits your licence.

Do I need a special licence for a cheap motorhome?

It depends on the plated weight, not the price. Anything up to 3,500kg can be driven on a standard category B car licence. Above that you need C1, which drivers who passed their test before 1 January 1997 hold automatically and everyone since has to take a separate test for. Plenty of older coachbuilts sit just under 3,500kg, so check the plate on the specific vehicle rather than assuming from its size.

Do cheap motorhomes cost more to run?

Insurance and road tax are often lower on an older vehicle, and vehicles registered before 1 January 1985 are exempt from VED. The real costs are fuel on an older engine, maintenance, and emissions charges - a pre-Euro 6 diesel will pay to enter London's ULEZ and other clean air zones. Coachbuilts are also thirstier and harder to park than a van conversion, which is worth weighing if most of your trips are short.

Can I get finance on a cheap motorhome?

Sometimes, but it gets harder as the vehicle gets older - many lenders will not finance a vehicle that will be over 15 years old at the end of the term, and some set a minimum advance above £5,000. We work with motorhome finance specialists and can tell you what is realistic on a specific vehicle before you put a deposit down. Ask us first rather than assuming.

Are these motorhomes sold by dealers or private sellers?

Private sellers. Motorhome Pig is a brokerage, not a dealership - we do not own the vehicles or hold stock on a forecourt. Every listing belongs to its owner, and we verify the seller, market the vehicle, arrange the viewing appointment at their address and handle the payment and paperwork securely. That is why prices here carry no dealer margin.

How do I view a cheap motorhome listed on Motorhome Pig?

Enquire on the listing and we will arrange a viewing appointment directly with the owner, at the vehicle's location. We do not attend viewings ourselves - the seller shows you their own motorhome, which is generally the person best placed to answer questions about it. Bring a torch and a damp meter, and give yourself an hour.
