About Fiat motorhomes
Fiat doesn't build motorhomes itself, but the Fiat Ducato is the single most important base vehicle in European leisure-vehicle history, used by an estimated two-thirds of all coachbuilt motorhomes on UK roads. Produced at the Sevel Sud plant in Atessa, Italy under a long-running Fiat-PSA joint venture since 1981, the Ducato is shared mechanically with the Peugeot Boxer and Citroën Relay. The current third generation launched as the X250 in 2006 - the first chassis designed specifically with motorhome converters in mind - and was updated as the X290 in 2014 and the X290/X295 in 2021. Fiat-exclusive 2.2 and 2.3 MultiJet diesels (typically 130, 140, 160 or 180hp) power most of the market, paired with manual or 9-speed automatic transmissions. UK listings under "Fiat" are usually coachbuilt motorhomes from brands such as Auto-Trail, Bailey, Swift, Hymer, Bürstner, Adria, Pilote, Rapido or Roller Team built on the Ducato cab-chassis, plus Ducato panel-van conversions and unconverted vans sold as camper bases.
Frequently asked questions about Fiat motorhomes
Is a Fiat Ducato reliable as a motorhome base vehicle?
Yes - the Ducato has been the European motorhome industry's default chassis for over four decades, and the third-generation X250/X290/X295 platforms are well-supported by Fiat Professional dealers and independent specialists. Common issues to check include AL-KO chassis extensions on coachbuilts, EGR/DPF maintenance on the 2.3 MultiJet and the well-documented "judder" on early X290 9-speed automatics, which Fiat addressed with software and clutch updates.
What's the difference between the Fiat Ducato X250, X290 and X295?
The X250 (2006-2014) was the first Ducato designed around motorhome converters and uses earlier 2.3 MultiJet engines. The X290 (2014-2021) brought MultiJet II diesels, a refreshed cab, ESP as standard and the 9-speed Comfort-Matic auto. The X290/X295 (2021 onwards) added Euro 6D engines, a digital dashboard, AdBlue and the Stellantis-era driver-assist systems.
Is a Fiat Ducato the same as a Peugeot Boxer or Citroën Relay?
Mechanically and structurally, yes - all three are built on the same Sevel platform in Atessa, Italy, and share bodyshells, cabs and most running gear. The main differences are the engine families (Fiat uses its own MultiJet diesels, while Peugeot and Citroën fit PSA/Stellantis BlueHDi units), badging, dashboard trim and dealer network.
