About Dethleffs motorhomes
Dethleffs traces back to 1931, when Arist Dethleffs built a wooden caravan in Isny im Allgäu so his family could travel with him on sales trips - generally credited as Germany's first caravan. The motorhome side launched in 1983 on the Fiat Ducato and the company has been part of the Erwin Hymer Group since 2015, sitting in the family-orientated mid-market alongside Bürstner. The Trend is the entry coachbuilt range, the Globebus a more compact low-profile (with a new Performance 4x4 variant added for 2025), the Esprit a higher-spec touring coachbuilt, and the Magic Edition models offer special-edition trim packs. The campervan line is led by the Globevan, Globetrail and Globetrotter on the Fiat Ducato. Most coachbuilts run on the Fiat Ducato with selected Iveco Daily and Ford Transit options higher up the range, particularly on tag-axle A-classes. Dethleffs is known for the "family inside" ethos - bunk-bed and over-cab layouts are a core part of the lineup, which is fairly unusual at the German end of the market. UK dealers include Lowdhams and Elite Motorhomes.
Frequently asked questions about Dethleffs motorhomes
Who owns Dethleffs?
Dethleffs has been part of the Erwin Hymer Group since 2015, the German leisure-vehicle group that also owns Hymer, Bürstner, Niesmann+Bischoff, Laika and Carado. The factory remains in Isny im Allgäu in southern Germany, where the company was founded in 1931.
Are Dethleffs motorhomes good for families?
Yes - family use is a core part of the brand. The Trend and Esprit coachbuilts are routinely offered in bunk-bed and over-cab layouts that sleep five or six, which is less common among other German manufacturers, and the Globebus and Globetrail offer compact options for two to four.
What chassis do Dethleffs motorhomes use?
Most Dethleffs coachbuilts and campervans are built on the Fiat Ducato, including the Globetrail panel vans. Heavier tag-axle A-classes and the new Globebus Performance 4x4 use the Iveco Daily, and Ford Transit options have appeared on selected ranges.
