About Compass motorhomes

Compass is a British brand built in Consett, County Durham, originally founded in 1978 by Siddle Cook and absorbed into the Explorer Group in 1998 alongside Elddis, Buccaneer and Xplore. The whole group passed to the Erwin Hymer Group in 2017. Compass motorhomes share their factory, chassis and body shells with Elddis, with the Avantgarde the core coachbuilt range - typically two to six berth low-profile and over-cab layouts on the Peugeot Boxer (the AL-KO chassis sister to the Fiat Ducato), with SoLiD construction (Strong, Lightweight, Insulated, Dependable) bonded bodywork. Erwin Hymer Group UK announced in September 2023 that it was discontinuing the Compass brand with immediate effect for the 2024 model year, so there are no new Compass motorhomes being built - the range is now used-only. Most live UK stock is 2017-2023 Avantgarde models. Note that the well-known Casita, Capiro and Camino names belong to Compass's caravan range, not the motorhome lineup. Older models traded under the Kensington and Avantis names.

Frequently asked questions about Compass motorhomes

Are Compass motorhomes still being made?

No. Erwin Hymer Group UK announced in September 2023 that it was dropping the Compass motorhome brand with immediate effect for the 2024 model year. The Consett factory still produces Elddis motorhomes and the Compass touring caravan range, but no new Compass motorhomes are being built.

What is the difference between a Compass and an Elddis motorhome?

Very little mechanically. Compass and Elddis are sister brands inside the Explorer Group, built in the same Consett factory using the same SoLiD bonded body construction and the same Peugeot Boxer / Fiat Ducato AL-KO chassis. The differences come down to trim, soft furnishings, decals and price point rather than engineering.

Are Compass motorhomes built in the UK?

Yes. Compass motorhomes were built at the Explorer Group factory in Consett, County Durham, which is one of the few remaining motorhome manufacturing sites in the UK. The site continues to produce Elddis motorhomes and Explorer Group caravans.
