About Winnebago motorhomes

Winnebago Industries was incorporated in Forest City, Iowa on 12 February 1958 by local businessman John K. Hanson, originally as a furniture-trailer assembly operation called Modernistic Industries of Iowa, and adopted the Winnebago name in 1961 after the river running through Forest City. The first Winnebago motorhome rolled off the assembly line in 1966 at roughly half the price of competitors, and the brand went on to become so dominant in North America that Winnebago entered everyday English as a generic term for a motorhome. The company is now publicly traded on the NYSE as WGO, with corporate headquarters in Eden Prairie, Minnesota since 2021 and manufacturing still anchored at Forest City, Iowa, along with sister brands Newmar, Grand Design RV, Chris-Craft and Barletta. The motorhome line splits across Class A (Adventurer on Ford F53, Journey and others), Class C (View and Navion on Mercedes-Benz Sprinter cab-chassis, Vita, Ekko, Minnie Winnie, Spirit, Outlook and Porto on Ford Transit or E-Series), and Class B camper vans (Travato on Ram ProMaster, Era and Revel on Mercedes Sprinter, Solis on Ram ProMaster). On the UK secondhand market Winnebagos are almost exclusively LHD US imports brought in by specialist dealers, with the Sprinter-based View and Travato proving the most usable on UK roads thanks to their tighter footprint.

Frequently asked questions about Winnebago motorhomes

Can I drive a Winnebago in the UK?

Yes, but you need to check the V5C and your licence. Most Winnebago motorhomes are over 3.5 tonnes MAM and are often registered in the UK as Private Heavy Goods Vehicles, which means you need a category C1 licence (3.5 to 7.5 tonnes) or category C (over 7.5 tonnes) to drive them legally. Drivers who passed their car test before 1 January 1997 typically have C1 entitlement automatically, but anyone who passed after that date will need to apply for C1 via a D2 form and D4 medical, then sit a separate test.

Are Winnebago motorhomes right-hand drive?

Effectively no. Winnebago Industries builds for the North American market only, so every factory-built Winnebago is left-hand drive. UK-market vehicles are LHD US imports converted to meet UK lighting, registration and IVA requirements by specialist importers. Aftermarket right-hand drive conversions for large motorhomes are uncommon and expensive, so the overwhelming majority of Winnebagos for sale in the UK remain LHD.

What is the difference between a Winnebago Travato, View and Adventurer?

The Travato is a Class B camper van built on the Ram ProMaster (the same base vehicle as the Fiat Ducato), making it the most compact and the easiest of the three to use on UK roads. The View is a Class C coachbuilt on the Mercedes-Benz Sprinter cab-chassis with an over-cab bed, sitting in the middle on size and price. The Adventurer is a full-size Class A on the Ford F53 chassis, sleeping up to seven, and is by far the largest, heaviest and least practical for UK roads, parking and ferry crossings.
