Summary: A motorhome on hire purchase (HP) or personal contract purchase (PCP) is generally still owned by the finance company until the agreement is settled, so a UK owner cannot simply sell it and leave the finance outstanding. It may still be possible to arrange a sale before the agreement ends, provided the owner knows the early settlement figure, has a realistic valuation and meets the lender’s requirements before ownership transfers.

Can you sell a motorhome that’s still on finance? Yes, it may be possible to arrange a sale before the finance agreement ends. If the motorhome is on HP or PCP, the finance company will generally still own the vehicle until the agreement is settled, so the seller needs to understand what is owed and how the outstanding finance will be settled before the sale completes.

At Motorhome Pig, we know people sell motorhomes for all sorts of reasons. Sometimes they’re ready for an upgrade, sometimes their circumstances have changed, and sometimes they simply aren’t using their motorhome as much as they’d hoped.

Having spent more than 30 years in the motor trade, I’ve learnt that the best place to start isn’t with assumptions about what you can or can’t do. It’s with understanding your circumstances and working out what options are available.

And that’s very much how we approach things at Motorhome Pig. The Pigs, as we affectionately call our team, are here to help owners make sense of the selling process, whether everything is straightforward or there are a few things to work through first.

Key takeaways
  • Under HP or PCP the finance company generally owns the motorhome until the agreement is settled, so it cannot simply be sold with the finance left outstanding.
  • Start with an early settlement figure from the finance provider, in writing. It isn’t necessarily the same as adding up the remaining monthly payments.
  • Compare that figure with a realistic valuation. Value above the settlement figure is positive equity; value below it is negative equity.
  • A motorhome bought with an unsecured personal loan may be different, because the owner may already own it outright.
  • Be upfront with your finance provider, any broker and any buyer, and make sure the finance is cleared before ownership transfers.

How do I sell a motorhome with outstanding finance?

Selling a motorhome that is still on finance comes down to five steps: check the type of finance agreement, request a settlement figure, find out what the motorhome is worth, discuss the options with the finance provider (and any broker), and agree how the finance will be cleared before ownership transfers.

If you’re thinking about selling a motorhome that’s still on finance, there are five things I’d recommend doing:

  • Check your finance agreement. Establish whether you have HP, PCP, a personal loan or another arrangement.
  • Request a settlement figure. Contact your finance provider to find out exactly how much it would cost to settle the agreement.
  • Find out what your motorhome is worth. A realistic valuation helps you understand whether the sale could cover the outstanding balance.
  • Discuss your options. Speak to your finance provider and, if you’re considering using a broker, explain the situation at the beginning.
  • Agree how the finance will be cleared. Make sure the lender’s requirements are met and any necessary settlement is completed before ownership transfers.

The important thing is not to ignore the finance or assume it will somehow sort itself out once you’ve found a buyer.

How do I find out how much finance is left?

Contact the finance provider and ask for an early settlement figure. This shows how much it would cost to settle the agreement at that point. It isn’t necessarily the same as adding up the remaining monthly payments: depending on the agreement, there may be interest adjustments, charges or a final payment to consider.

Ask your provider how long the figure is valid for and whether there are any particular requirements for selling the vehicle.

I’d always recommend getting that information in writing so you have something clear to work from.

How much is my motorhome worth if it still has finance?

Knowing what is owed is only half of the equation. A seller also needs a realistic idea of what the motorhome could sell for in today’s market. Motorhome Pig’s AI-powered instant motorhome valuation gives owners a quick starting point, which can then be compared with the settlement figure. It is a starting point rather than a guaranteed selling price.

This is where I’d start looking at the bigger picture.

At Motorhome Pig, we’ve developed the UK’s first AI-powered instant motorhome valuation platform, giving owners a quick starting point for understanding their vehicle’s potential value. You can use our instant motorhome valuation tool to begin exploring what your motorhome could be worth, and our guide to how much your motorhome is worth explains what drives that number.

The valuation is a starting point rather than a guaranteed selling price, but it can help you begin comparing your motorhome’s potential value with what you still owe.

And if you’re looking at those figures thinking, “Right, but what does that actually mean for me?”, that’s where the Pigs come in.

We’ve built some clever technology at Motorhome Pig, but we’ve also built a team of experienced people who genuinely enjoy helping owners work through their options. The technology gives you a useful starting point. The people are there for the conversations that need a little more understanding, reassurance or experience.

Want a starting figure to compare with your settlement figure?

Sell my motorhome

What if my motorhome is worth more than the finance?

If a motorhome is worth more than the amount required to settle the finance, the owner is in what’s known as positive equity. For example, a motorhome that sells for £45,000 with a £30,000 settlement figure leaves £15,000, before any selling fees or other costs.

For example:

  • Your motorhome sells for £45,000.
  • Your finance settlement figure is £30,000.
  • That leaves £15,000 before any selling fees or other costs.

It’s a straightforward example, but it shows why understanding both figures matters.

You might have more money tied up in your motorhome than you realised, particularly if you’ve been making repayments for some time.

Just remember that the amount advertised for sale isn’t necessarily the amount you’ll achieve, and any brokerage fees or other selling costs need to be considered too.

What if I owe more on my motorhome than it’s worth?

Owing more than the motorhome is worth is called negative equity. If a motorhome could sell for £40,000 but the settlement figure is £45,000, that leaves a £5,000 shortfall. Selling would not automatically clear the finance; the owner would need to establish how the remaining balance could be paid, or whether another arrangement is available through the lender.

It doesn’t necessarily mean you have no options, but it’s something to understand before making any decisions.

My advice would be to avoid guessing what your motorhome is worth or assuming that the outstanding finance makes it impossible to sell.

Get the figures first. Then you can have a much more useful conversation about what happens next.

Both examples are illustrative

The £45,000 / £30,000 and £40,000 / £45,000 figures above are simple worked examples, not real sales. Your own position depends on your lender’s settlement figure and what your motorhome can realistically achieve.

Can I sell a motorhome on PCP or hire purchase?

Potentially, yes, but finance agreements differ. Under hire purchase (HP) the finance company generally owns the vehicle until the agreement has been fully paid. Under personal contract purchase (PCP) ownership also normally remains with the finance provider unless the payments required to purchase the vehicle, including any applicable final payment, are completed.

That means you generally cannot simply sell the motorhome privately while leaving the finance outstanding. You would need to settle the agreement or obtain the lender’s agreement to an appropriate settlement arrangement before the sale can be completed.

A motorhome purchased using an unsecured personal loan may be different because you may already own the vehicle outright, even though you still owe money on the loan.

Type of financeWho generally owns the motorhomeWhat it means for a sale
Hire purchase (HP)The finance company, until the agreement has been fully paidSettle the agreement, or obtain the lender’s agreement to an appropriate settlement arrangement, before the sale completes
Personal contract purchase (PCP)Normally the finance provider, unless the payments required to purchase the vehicle, including any applicable final payment, are completedSettle the agreement, or agree an appropriate process with the lender, before transferring ownership
Unsecured personal loanThe owner may already own the vehicle outright, even though money is still owed on the loanMay be different from HP or PCP, so check the actual agreement
General position only. The terms of your own agreement decide what applies, so always check them with your finance provider.

The pattern is that HP and PCP both generally leave the finance company as owner until settlement, while a personal loan may not, which is why the key is to check your actual agreement rather than assuming every type of motorhome finance works in the same way.

Can I sell my motorhome privately if it still has finance?

A private sale can be explored, but the finance position needs to be resolved properly. If the finance provider retains ownership, the seller cannot simply take payment from a buyer, hand over the keys and leave the finance outstanding. Any buyer will understandably want reassurance that the motorhome can be transferred without unresolved finance attached to it.

That means understanding your settlement requirements, being upfront about the position and making sure the correct process is followed.

Selling privately also means taking responsibility for enquiries, negotiations, paperwork and the financial transaction yourself.

For a vehicle worth tens of thousands of pounds, I’d encourage any seller to think carefully about how comfortable they feel managing those steps.

If you’re considering the different ways to sell, our guide to should you sell your motorhome through a broker? explores the advantages and considerations.

Can a motorhome broker help with outstanding finance?

A broker may be able to help a seller understand the selling process and what needs to be organised, although the finance provider’s requirements will still need to be met. Motorhome Pig asks sellers to mention outstanding finance at the beginning, so the team can talk through the information needed and identify anything to clarify with the finance provider.

At Motorhome Pig, we believe sellers should be able to have an open conversation about their circumstances before making a decision. You don’t need to arrive with everything worked out.

If you’re considering selling a motorhome that still has finance attached, tell us at the beginning. One of the Pigs can talk through the information you’ll need, help you understand how our selling process works and identify anything that needs clarifying with your finance provider.

We’re a family-run business, founded by my son Lewis and me, and although we’ve developed some pretty clever technology, we’ve never wanted that to come at the expense of having real people there when customers need them. We’re a people business at heart, and we’re investing in our team just as much as our technology. In fact, we’ve recently moved into bigger premises in Halifax to make room for our growing team, because we know it’s the people behind Motorhome Pig who really make the difference.

Technology gives you a starting point. The conversations happen with people, here outside the Motorhome Pig office in Halifax.

Our AI-powered valuation platform can help you understand where you’re starting from, while our team is there to help you navigate the practicalities.

And once your motorhome is being sold through Motorhome Pig, our bespoke seller dashboard gives you greater visibility over enquiries, offers and the progress of your sale.

For us, it’s about helping people feel informed, supported and confident throughout the process.

Tell us about the finance at the start

You don’t need to have it all worked out. Mention the finance when you get in touch, and one of the Pigs will talk through what you’ll need. How the agreement is settled is always confirmed with your finance provider.

What documents do I need to sell a motorhome with finance?

Before progressing with a sale, a seller with outstanding finance should gather the finance agreement and provider’s details, a current settlement figure with its expiry date, any instructions from the lender about settling the agreement, the V5C registration certificate, MOT information and service history, and relevant maintenance, repair and habitation records.

I’d recommend getting the following information together before progressing with a sale:

  • Your finance agreement and provider’s details.
  • A current settlement figure, including its expiry date.
  • Any instructions from your lender about settling the agreement.
  • Your V5C registration certificate.
  • MOT information and service history.
  • Relevant maintenance, repair and habitation records.

Having these details ready can make conversations with your finance provider, broker or prospective buyer much easier.

And don’t worry if your motorhome paperwork isn’t perfectly organised. We’ve already put together a separate guide, What documents do I need to sell my motorhome? A complete UK checklist, which covers the paperwork worth gathering before you sell.

Should I wait until my motorhome finance is paid off?

Not necessarily. The right decision depends on the owner’s circumstances, the terms of the finance agreement, the motorhome’s current value and the cost of settling the agreement early. Waiting may make sense in some situations; exploring a sale sooner may be worth considering in others. Either way, the decision is best made knowing the figures.

There may be situations where waiting makes sense. There may also be situations where exploring a sale sooner is worth considering.

What I wouldn’t recommend is making that decision without knowing the figures.

Start by understanding what you owe and what the motorhome could realistically be worth. If the figures don’t work for you now, at least you’ll know where you stand.

And if you’re not sure, speak to your finance provider about your agreement and an experienced motorhome professional about the selling process.

My advice is simple: find out what you owe, get a realistic idea of what your motorhome could sell for and make sure you understand how the finance would be settled. Selling a motorhome should be about making an informed decision, not feeling pressured into one.

Frequently asked questions about selling a motorhome with finance

Can you sell a motorhome with outstanding finance in the UK?

It may be possible to arrange a sale, but if the finance company owns the motorhome under a hire purchase (HP) or personal contract purchase (PCP) agreement, the finance generally needs to be settled, or an appropriate arrangement agreed with the lender, before ownership can transfer. The starting points are an early settlement figure from the finance provider and a realistic valuation.

Can I sell my motorhome before the finance agreement ends?

Potentially. Ask the finance provider for an early settlement figure and check the terms of the agreement. An owner does not necessarily need to wait until the original end date, but the figure may include interest adjustments, charges or a final payment, so it is worth getting it in writing along with how long it is valid for.

Can I sell a motorhome with PCP finance?

An owner can explore selling before a PCP agreement ends, but generally needs to settle the agreement, or agree an appropriate process with the lender, before transferring ownership. Under PCP, ownership normally remains with the finance provider unless the payments required to purchase the vehicle, including any applicable final payment, are completed.

What happens if I sell my motorhome for less than the finance balance?

There will be a shortfall, known as negative equity. The difference will need to be addressed so that the finance can be settled in accordance with the agreement. Selling the motorhome would not automatically clear the finance, so the owner needs to establish how the remaining balance could be paid, or whether another arrangement is available through the lender.

Can a motorhome broker settle my outstanding finance?

Arrangements vary between brokers and finance providers. Ask the broker what assistance they can offer and confirm with the lender how settlement must be handled. Motorhome Pig’s team can discuss the selling process and what information a seller will need, and recommends raising any outstanding finance at the very start of the conversation.

How do I check my motorhome’s value before settling finance?

Start by getting a realistic valuation and comparing it with the lender’s current settlement figure. Motorhome Pig offers an AI-powered instant motorhome valuation tool to help owners take that first step. The valuation is a starting point rather than a guaranteed selling price, and any brokerage fees or other selling costs need to be considered too.

What is the difference between outstanding finance and negative equity?

Outstanding finance is the amount still owed under a finance agreement. Negative equity means the amount required to settle the finance is greater than the motorhome’s current value. A motorhome can have outstanding finance and still be in positive equity, where its value is more than the settlement figure.

Do I need to tell a buyer my motorhome has outstanding finance?

Yes. A seller should be transparent about any finance affecting the vehicle and ensure that the agreement is dealt with properly before ownership transfers. Any buyer will understandably want reassurance that the motorhome can be transferred to them without unresolved finance attached to it.
